Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5, a mid tier model built around one core pitch: agentic AI performance that rivals more expensive systems without the token costs that made them impractical at scale. Why Cost Efficiency Is the Headline, Not Raw Capability
Anthropic is explicit that Sonnet 5 is not its most capable system. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 remain the company's flagship models. But the company's own framing puts Sonnet 5's performance close to Opus 4.8, a notable jump from Sonnet 4.6, while keeping the token economics far more favorable. For enterprise buyers running agentic workloads at volume, that gap between near flagship capability and mid tier pricing is the entire value proposition.
Anthropic says testers reported that Sonnet 5 completes multistep tasks that earlier Sonnet versions would abandon partway through, and that it self checks output without an explicit instruction to do so. In agentic pipelines, where a model may be chaining together dozens of tool calls or sub tasks autonomously, that kind of persistence and self verification directly reduces the number of retries, and therefore the token spend, needed to reach a finished output.
